The Solar Installation Process Explained

The solar installation process isn’t as complicated as you might think. Here’s how it works and what to expect during solar panel installation.

Did you know that the average cost of solar systems is anywhere between $15,000 and $25,000? You can get solar systems on the cheaper end of the spectrum if you install them yourselves.

If you think you can DIY the solar installation process, you need to know everything that it entails. Read on to learn all about it.

Mount Installation

The first step in the solar installation process is to place the mounts that will support the panels. Depending on the requirement for your panels, you can use flush mounts of roof-ground mounts.

Mounts are base structures that keep your panels sturdy and protect them from the elements. The mounting structure needs to be slightly tilted.

In general, the angle of tilt is anywhere between 18 and 36 degrees. A solar installation company often uses a solar tracker to increase the efficiency of the conversion.

Solar Panel Installation

After the mounts get installed, the next step involves fixing the panels with the mounting structure. To secure the structure properly, nuts and bolts are used to ensure the sturdiness lasts long.

Electrical Wiring

Often, universal connectors like MC4 can connect to all types of solar panels so choose these when you can. Solar energy is electrically connected in the following order:

  1. Series connection
  2. Parallel connection

Series connection wiring increases voltage when matched with the battery bank. For parallel connection, the wiring voltage of the panels stays the same.

Connect the Solar System to the Inverter

A solar energy company will then connect the system to the solar inverter. The positive solar panel wire connects to the positive terminal of the inverter. The negative wire connects to the negative terminal.

Connect Inverter to the Solar Battery

The next step involves connecting the solar inverter and the solar battery. Much like connecting the solar system to the inverter, the positive terminal connects with the positive battery and vice versa.

To store electricity backup, the battery is needed in an off-grid solar system.

Connect Inverter to the Grid

To make the connection between the inverter and the grid, a normal plug is used to connect to the main power switchboard. The output wire supplies electricity to the home when connected to the electric board.
