Sweet foods have been around since ancient times. There is evidence of early humans eating gathered foods, including fruits.

The adding of sweeteners to food is a little newer, but still quite ancient as far as human history goes. Before the discovery of cultivation of sugarcane, people were using wine and fruit juice to sweeten things.

There are references to multi-course meals in Ancient Rome, Persia, and many other places.

The word dessert most likely stems from 17th century France. The practice of formal dining has also given way to various plating techniques. We’ll talk about some of these techniques in the paragraphs below.

  1. Color

Nearly all off the greatest chefs in the world will tell you that food can be a form of art, and there’s no reason to pretend it isn’t. Art is something created to be experienced and enjoyed by people.

It’s often beautiful and meant to invoke feeling or thought. Food meets all these standards, and has the added benefit of allowing the viewer to touch and taste the art. This is expressly forbidden in most art museums.

Food can even use a few of the same techniques as art, like using color to convey mood and flavor. For instance, you might use bright colors for a lighter, sweeter dessert, while dark colors can indicate something rich and chocolatey.

  1. Texture

Texture is yet another component of a good dessert. Our tongues can detect the feeling of something as well as the taste of it.

Some foods are known at least partly for their texture. Potato chips, for instance, are known for their crunch. Caramel is often described as chewy.

Texture can also make a dish more fun to look at, the same way it does in some paintings.

  1. Contrast

One of the biggest themes in food art is contrast. Contrast can be created in many different ways when cooking.
